The Slammer - Episode
9
First broadcast: Friday 17 November 2006, BBC ONE/CBBC
Channel, 4:55pm
It's lunchtime in the Slammer, and the Governor's just about to
reveal the names of the lucky inmates chosen to perform on the Freedom
Show. This week, the lucky few are Mat Ricardo, Bendy Wendy, BMX
Master Rob Alton and Mickey The Amazing Mindreader. He already knew
he was going to be performing, of course.
Frank Burgess interrupts the fun. He's got two new prisoners with
him, The Great Alfredo and his wife. Alfredo got two years for keeping
disorderly rabbits. "The Great Alfredo, he's a Slammer legend!"
the Governor replies. "He was here twenty years ago, did this
amazing disappearing act! He made his wife disappear." Ted
decides to let Alfredo perform on the Freedom Show, as he thinks
the act is fantastic. Frank Burgess disagrees and thinks it's against
the rules, but it's the Governor himself who's in charge of the
Slammer. "Mr Burgess, I am the rules!" The Great Alfredo
asks Frank if he could get his old cell back, but he's told he'll
get what he's given!
Melvin's still smuggling stuff in and out of the prison. He's getting
another order ready when he hears Frank Burgess coming down the
corridor. Bendy Wendy's got some problems too, she's stuck in a
rather awkward position, and can't get back to normal. It looks
like she won't be performing on the Freedom Show after all!
Peter Nokio, who shares his cell with Melvin, Titch, Charlie Chimp
and a whole host of other puppets, wonders why The Great Alfredo
was so desperate to get his old cell back, the one Peter and Melvin
are in. Melvin thinks he probably knows about the tunnel, and he
shows Peter the secret tunnel, hidden after a poster on the wall.
"All this time, we could just escape!" Peter shouts. But
Melvin doesn't want to escape, he doesn't want to perform any more
after the incident at the Royal Variety Performance.
Melvin's off to D-block to deliver his order, but just as he's about
to leave his cell, Mr Burgess discovers the smuggled goods and takes
Melvin to see the Governor. Bendy Wendy is not able to perform today,
so the Governor decides Melvin will replace her, much to the delight
of Frank Burgess, as he knows Melvin's afraid to get on stage.

It's showtime, and the scared Melvin is up first! But he doesn't
appear on stage when the Governor introduces him, he's gone! He's
on the road to freedom, as he's entered the tunnel in his cell.
What he doesn't know however, is that the tunnel doesn't lead to
the outside world, but to the stage! It's the tunnel The Great Alfredo
used for his amazing disappearance act! As Melvin's not able to
perform, the Governor decides someone from the audience should take
to the stage instead. Shaun Walsh, also known as the Michael Jackson
Kid, volunteers and performs a brilliant rendition of Rockin' Robin.
