The Slammer - Episode 8
First broadcast: Friday 10 November 2006, BBC ONE/CBBC Channel, 4:55pm

Peter Nokio's new puppet friend Ted Astaire is a born tap dancer. He's doing a little routine in the corridors of the Slammer when the Governor notices him. He loves the act and puts Peter Nokio and Ted down for the Freedom Show.

Mr Burgess interrupts them by bringing in a new prisoner. The new inmate's called Hellcat McSavage, he's a dodgy looking character with a dark secret. He's not a performer, but a real criminal, trying to get an easy stretch in the Slammer. The Governor doesn't know about this, of course, and thinks Hellcat does close-up magic. "He booked himself to appear at Wembley Stadium, but the people at the back couldn't see a thing! He got ten years for that!"

Melvin, Peter Nokio and Ted Astaire are standing outside Hellcat's cell. They want to say hello to him, but they're afraid of his dodgy appearance. They decide Melvin should go in first.

McSavage is having a nap when Melvin enters his cell, he looks angry. Melvin introduces himself. "I'm the go-to man around here. When people need things they come to me." Hellcat McSavage almost squashes Melvin's hand when he tries to shake it. "Not any more they don't, get all your props loaded up and locked in my cell. If you want to practise your act from now on it's gonna cost you! No body even taps a foot without my say so! I am the daddy now!" On top of that, Hellcat wants a Star Wars duvet cover and a Doctor Who alarm clock!

Hellcat McSavage is robbing off the other inmates. "I'm very happy for you to sing in the Freedom Show, but it's gonna cost you thirty quid, for every note!" The Governor thinks there's a funny atmosphere hanging in the Slammer ever since Hellcat arrived. Everyone's miserable, it's beginning to feel like a prison! Frank Burgess is happy however, he likes to see miserable inmates.

In the meantime, Melvin got his hands on Hellcat's real record, and not the fake one that was given to the Governor. Hellcat's not a real entertainer at all! He just pulled strings so he could get an easy stretch in the Slammer. Peter Nokio reckons they should let the Governor know about this, but Melvin thinks it's too risky. "If Hellcat finds out it was us, he'll get us!" They'll have to think of something else.

Hellcat is busy counting up his money in his cell when Melvin comes in again. "I just wondered if you were concerned about the Freedom Show." Hellcat doesn't know what Melvin's on about. "A performance?!" Melvin says he knows that Hellcat shouldn't really be in the Slammer, as he hasn't got an act. "I'm just worried you might get found out. You say you're a magician, but what if the Governor asks you to do a trick?" Melvin brings in Woodrow, who's going to teach Hellcat some simple tricks.

It's time for the second part of Melvin's plan, getting Hellcat a place on the Freedom Show, and let him win. That's going to be the only way to get rid of him. Peter Nokio and Ted Astaire aren't happy though, as they'll have to give up their place on the Freedom Show. They're interrupted by a terrible noise coming from Hellcat's cell. He's angry because he can't even do a simple card trick! "It's not gonna work!" he yells.
